My current master bathroom project is inspired by the outdoors. The dark Nero bamboo impression on the porcelain floor grounds the space. The glazed maple vanity has depth and stature. It is topped with mottled Quartz...like white sand. Beautiful and translucent, the glass creates a watery spa environment. Required, an element of sparkle, achieved with metal and stone accent tiles &

Brizo Siderna bath fixtures...the rooms jewels!!

A Sunday Stroll & Architecture

This past Sunday I parked my car along the Boston Garden and decided to take a long walk down Commonwealth Ave.. It was a cold wintry day and the sun was shining so brightly I became oblivious to the chilly temps and grew distracted by the beauty of one of Boston's most notable streets.

An Illustration from 1881 features the green way that begins at the western side of the Public Garden.
The greenway is also known as The Commonwealth Mall which displays several statues and was beautifully
designed by Arthur Delevan Gilman and Frederick Law Olmstead.

Every entrance tells it's own architectural story.

Movement in a walkway is always more visually interesting and welcoming.

This corner home and it's Mansard slate roof boast of grand days.
I always wonder what stories it would tell me if it could.

A beautiful side courtyard and it's overgrown view. Look closely and you'll see the copper roof.
What flowers would you place in the pots flanking the entrance? I would love to see them overflowing with hydrengia's and a crown of willow for verticality. Then maybe a soft coat of verbena cascading down the pillars for movement and fragence on those breezy summer days.

I love an entrance where the steps become grander as they descend. It is typical in the southern states like Savannah, Georgia where the entrance seems to open up and wrap it's arms around you. A true sign that you are welcome.

Aged and Verde Gris balconies dress the curved windows.

The brick and iron work are lovely, however the birch is the real show stopper. I love the simplicity of dressing the entrance with this organic display that will last all winter long.

A Christmas tree pair makes for good space saving!

Every year I try to find new ways to void our small family room of feeling overwhelmed by a Christmas tree. The obvious is a narrow tree but year after year of searching for a slender tree can become daunting. Inevitably it would always appear slightly dinky at best. So this year I opted for TWO dinky trees! There's power in numbers!

The good news is, I actually found two trees that were pretty similar in size and shape. I trimmed heavily from the bottom up and then placed them into two new trash pails surrounded by stones to hold in place and create a well for watering.

By trimming heavily and getting rid of most of the girth, the trees appear to recede back. Also with the trees set back, we gain additional floor space for gifts. Normally we would be tripping over encroaching presents but now with two placement options, everything fits tightly around each end of the hearth...a win win!

Fabric remnants hide the containers, a few branches from trimmings are placed on top to conceal the well. A few lights and ornaments...done!

Today this came across my computer screen

& stopped me in my tracks!!

Christopher Guy via Modenus provided me with the perfect example of fearless creativity. I love this headboard worn by a diva of the best kind. She wears her Christoper Guy's hand carved headboard like a tiara! Sporting her stole and ebony heels, I can almost hear her saying..."A great evening awaits!"

How could you not feel luxurious when your bed is dressed like this! I always think of the bed as an extension of my clients personality. Dress the bed as if it were a stylish friend. Well coordinated, elegant and comfortable, the bedding should be soft and luxurious to the touch. When selecting night tables and lamps think of them as the jewery/earrings if you will.

Formal attire is not required. The most casual bedrooms can still have a strong sense of style and elegance. A tight design that relates to the space will create harmony and balance no matter the style.

The master bedroom is the most important room in the house and often the most neglected. Put yourself first and create a sanctuary that rejuevenates and restores your spirit.

Christmas decor reused & made NEW!

As we all know Thanksgiving is the official gate opener to the holiday season. The day after, typically known as Black Friday is like a day at the Kentucky Derby. Just make sure your not standing too close to the tracks, pure madness can get you swept away as shoppers burst out of the gates looking for the next best deal. Closet decorators chomp at the bit snatching up the latest items to get their dibs on this seasons holiday trends!! Well this year I have decided to void myself of crazed consumption and try to keep things as simple as possible. For the first time we are not hanging lights on the exterior of the house, we are opting for battery lit candles and lanterns with a single candle in each window. Please don't misunderstand, I love a good light show but sometimes you feel the need to pause. This is my year. Due to this new revelation, I decided that a few lights on the inside would be much needed to keep the sparkle alive. In addition, my goal this year is to repurpose. Beyond purchasing a fresh wreath, a few greens and ribbon, let's see how far I can get with using things I already have.

The first area I'm going to start with is the wall directly across from the front entry and the first thing you see as you enter. This wall has had many looks over the years. One reason is simply, it is such a small area that I can easily revamp it when I get the urge. I get lots of urges!

After removing all the existing items with the exception of a little blue box. I began to string lights on this basic wreath. I used ribbon and ornaments I saved from the prior year to decorate it.

Simple and easy.

These silver metallic malleable branches come in quite handy. I use them differently every year. They are a simple solution to frame out the wreath and add additional texture. I also hung a few small ornaments on them as well.

The wreath was hung using additional ribbon and a small crystal wreath to adorn the top.

I used a beautiful Wedgwood box I had for stacking and interest, some extra greens and a few candles. Done!

A Thankful start to a new holiday season!

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just days away! I don't know about you but as the time draws near I can start to smell the turkey with the anticipation of a busy kitchen filled with stories and lots of laughter. Although I have always enjoyed this holiday, I have a heightened appreciation lately. It is one of the few holidays were most people no matter what your religion or ethnicity can come together and celebrate collectively.

Today there is so much fear to always be so politically correct as not to offend. Yes, it is good to a point but as a country why are we so afraid to broaden and celebrate our cultural differences. Is this not what our nation is suppose to stand for? I am a christian and as child growing up in Brooklyn I loved playing the dreidel game and singing the song with my Jewish friends and learning more about their family and Hanukkah. It didn't make me any less christian but it certainly helped me to appreciate and understand their culture. I loved hearing about their preparations for Seder dinner and how they would have to carefully prepare their food. As I observed their family traditions I realized how close they were. Their rituals created a special bond, their own spiritual crest. It made them special in there own way. My childhood experiences such as these have made me excited in wanting to know more about what makes us different. I wanted this for my own children. When I hear stories of non-christian families putting up a Christmas tree or people of non-African descent celebrating Kwanzaa it makes me smile. I think what an open and confident family. Knowing who you are and not feeling threatened by someone's religious preference is living with an open heart. Our appreciation of other traditions and religions does not define who we are or our beliefs, it only helps to enrich us and bridge the cultural divide.

In many of our schools children can not be exposed to or acknowledge certain holidays for fear of offense. How does this teach tolerance? Since when is learning about someone elses heritage offensive. Instead of voiding our cultural differences we should be adding and layering more cultural fabric into our schools to ultimately lessen the fear. Where there is distance there is greater fear. Teaching our children tolerance is what gives them a cultural spirit. It's the key to a world that is compassionate and excepting of others.

This Thanksgiving I am extra grateful for a day were we can all say thank you for the bounty not only before us but for the bounty of friends, family and God's many blessings. Every year we try to share our table with someone who would ordinarily be spending it alone. Try to think of ways to honor this day and give thanks for life as we know it.

Canton Project update

Autumn is in the air and with this change brings the exterior completion of this Canton, Ma. home. You may recall this project from the fall of 2010 when we broke ground. The lovely family that resides here wanted to renovate their existing space and add an in law space. We are still working on the inside but I thought in the meantime I'd share the exterior now that it is finally complete.

The new in law addition sits on the left side of the main entrance as the new walkway meanders to connect them. Barreled copper awnings shelter the craftsman doors that are now supported by larger more substantial posts. The underside of the awnings are dressed in bead board and painted in Ben Moore "Crystalline" for watery sky effect. All lighting and hardware fixtures are oil rubbed bronze. Finally the finishing touch of new landscaping help to give this house its curb appeal .

Brizo Fashion Week 2011!

~When life grants you an unexpected gift in the form of a goddess!

Recently I received an invitation from Brizo to attend Fashion Week as one of "The Blogger 19." "Seriously! You mean your going to take care of all of my expenses, treat me like a superstar and then grant me the privilege of viewing Jason Wu's collection! Pinch me!" Needless to say, I was honored and humbled to be included among this wonderful group of esteemed bloggers and interior designers.

The event would entail learning more about the Brizo brand, participating in a designer's challenge and attend Jason Wu's Runway Show at Fashion Week. Then finally but certainly not least, a quintessential NY party at MPE Penthouse hosted by Brizo and Jason Wu himself!

The Brizo brand is a Delta company that has married high fashion with a superior line of faucets. Brizo is an innovative company that has taken their products to a new artistic level of design. Delta's boutique line of faucets was named after the Greek goddess "Brizo" protector of all trades of the sea. The goddess was also known as the prophet specializing in the interpretation of dreams.

Jason Wu began his collaboration with Brizo in 2006. Brizo sponsors Jason Wu's shows at New York Fashion Week and Jason designs used in Brizo advertising. The perfect partnership.

I was very impressed with the various collections displayed. They were sleek, modern and sophisticated. What I found most impressive beyond the aesthetics and design of the Brizo brand was the level of quality and how well it was paired with affordability! Being able to specify a product that will accommodate the average project budget is a win for me and my clients.

So how can a faucet be fashionable you ask? When you model a faucet after a perfume bottle or the curvaceous physique of an Art Deco illustration it's not so hard to imagine.

Take a look at the RSVP Collection. Here is an example of how Hollywood fashion design of the 1920's directly influenced this bath element. The collection is reminiscent of Harper's Bazaar's most illustrious artist and designer Erte.

After I fell in love with my new goddess friend Brizo it was time for the designers challenge! Separated into groups we all explored different areas of the city and applied the distinct architectural difference to our mood boards, to create the perfect master bathroom.

Did I mention that we all traveled in style the entire time!

DESIGN YOUR LIFE BEYOND YOUR SPACE

Our home is one of the most personal visual statements we can make and I think it's pretty safe to say that most of us want it to be a beautiful representation of who we are and how we live. Regardless of what stage we are at in reaching this aesthetic goal, we can get so caught up in the act of doing and achieving, that we forget to stop and smell the aromatherapy. Let's face it, there is always something to do or tweak when it comes to maintaining our homes. Even if your the most traditional person who avoids updating for trends sake, I can assure you that a few gallons of paint will still be waiting for you after seven years of daily living. My point? Live in the now. Find the time to celebrate the simplest joys and rituals that cost you nothing but time and effort. Regardless of how overwhelmed you my feel, these are the very moments that we can draw from for strength and perspective. Give yourself the gift of time for the soul purpose of giving back to you. Life isn't perfect and the next day is never guaranteed. Let's stop waiting for the "perfect time" or "the perfect space" to appreciate what we already have. Enjoy and create special moments whenever you can. Create a continuum of beauty that goes beyond the aesthetic. Indulge in the small pleasures that feed your spirit.

Make the time you spend at the table with loved ones or alone special. Set the table and use your best dishes. Why wait for guest to enjoy your home, when you can celebrate everyday.

Celebrations can be quiet. A calm and soothing focal point can be achieved with the simplest floral arrangement. Just walking by it can be a mood changer.

Revisit a cozy spot in your home, then use it! I love this daybed from Mohr & McPherson.

Use your outdoor spaces if your lucky enough to have one. Dine alfresco and have a staycation.

Take a long bath and recharge.

Listen to music and elevate your mood. If you get the urge... DANCE! One of my favorite artist to date is Esperanza Spalding. Beautiful and amazingly talented with musical maturity beyond her years. Music is similar to reading a book, it has the ability to transport you to a different place. In the age of "Slow Home" this is a great way to reduce stress and our carbon foot print:)

Yes, we should strive for beautiful surroundings, they will inevitably enhance the way we live. In the meantime, don't put yourself on hold or wait for your home to be perfect, enjoy it now! Alone or with friends make the most of ordinary times and turn them into extraordinary moments. You are your homes most valuable asset, realizing this is what makes your home truly beautiful.

THE GE MONOGRAM EXPERIENCE

As a guest of the GE Monogram Designer session, I gained new knowledge of what I thought was Louisville, KY. Until recently, bourbon, thoroughbreds and "The famous Louisville Slugger" were the only things that I associated with the southern charmer. Well, I know better now. Louisville is a cultural city with a strong artistic presence. Home to 21C Museum Hotel, one of the most highly regarded boutique hotels in the country, Louisville has a chic pulse that beats loud and clear. Currently the hotel is hosting the "Cuba Now" exhibit in addition to other featured artist. I was particularly drawn to the work of Guerra de la Paz and his mixed media sculpture "The Four Seasons," 2004. All four representations were made of assorted cloth to symbolize the changing seasons.

"THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE"

Ann Peabody also grabbed my attention with her incredible installation "Wheel Of Fortune, " an aerial sculpture that hangs above the atrium overlooking the lower gallery. On April 3rd, 1974 a tornado leveled Louisville and this is her artistic expression of the event. Ironically, a tornado came eerily close to the hotel during our stay in Louisville. Do you think the "Wheel of Fortune" dabbles in performance art?

The welcome reception was a highlight for me. I finally had a chance to connect, share laughter and converse with this great group of home experts I have come to call friends. It was a great time had by all, filled with many memorable moments and inspiration.

Yes, there was time spent in the classroom learning all about what GE Monogram had to offer. However, those moments were flanked by hands-on cooking sessions led by Chef Joe and Chef Brian . I found this to be the most effective tool to showcase GE Monogram's quality and high performance. When you can experience the end result and it is in the form of a delicious meal, you know that GE is putting their money where there mouth is. And just to keep it real, we also prepared some of our own meals to gain a full understanding of product capability. I must say, the Advantium Speed cooker has my vote. I fell in love with this wall oven. I didn't think that could be possible. The browning capability and speed blew me away!

By Measure

1 - 8oz Containers Strawberry Yogurt

1/4 Cup Honey
1 Tbs Cider Vinegar
1 1/2 Cups Crunchy Granola
1 Cup Berries
2 Bananas: Sliced
3/4 Greens

Preparation

Mix the yogurt, honey and vinegar together in a large bowl
Just before serving add the remaining ingredients and toss well with the yogurt dressing

JB prepares the pan on an induction stove top. Fast cooking, easy clean-up and quick cool down. Great for a house with little ones!

VISITING MARTHA!

For close to thirteen years now, I have been taking long weekend trips to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. I usually go before Memorial day weekend in order to avoid the summer rush. Rain or shine no matter, it's all about reconnecting with life long friends and creating special moments with new ones. Regroup, Relax, Remember and Recharge.

Views like this one always get my attention. Nothing like an arbor to create curb appeal to visually draw you in. Framing out the entrance to your garden can add beauty and architecture to your outside space. Even on a cloudy day, I found this to be inviting.

Walking through Edgartown, Ma. I spotted this newly built charmer resembling the old familiars that have been there for a hundred years. The brick driveway leading up to the weathered gray shingles make an attractive entrance to this setback residence. So classic, so simple, so New England. I spoke with a lovely lady named Dorothy who has lived in the area for 30 years. I felt as though I had known her before. A brief encounter can sometimes leave a lasting impression. Thank you Dorothy for the heart felt laughter we shared. Those are the daily gifts that feed my spirit. That's what weekends like this are all about.

I love the way this garden meanders along the walkway. A feeling of integration as opposed to soldiered up scrubs. Elements like flow help to create a more inviting and connected landscape.

Black pots and containers are always so attractive. Especially when dressed with a colorful bounty of plantings.

Old friends Lisa and Linda from N.Y. stop and pause for a moment before venturing in to buy delicious cupcakes!! Thankfully this time they weren't mistaken for cupcakes:) XO

OPENING DAY AT BRIMFIELD 2011!

It's Tuesday May 10th 2011 at 4AM and opening day where the worlds largest antique show is about to take place in Brimfield Massachusetts. I can hear the low voices and early bird movement of dealers in my hotel as I awaken. I can only imagine the gathering of last minute items and dealers essentials being packed up to start the first of a six day selling and buying Superbowl. Over a mile long Brimfield plays host to dealers and over 130,000.00+ visitors in a week! This is the first of three week long sessions that will take place this year. The founding father Gordan Reid would be very pleased to know that the original 67 dealers he invited in 1959 has now grown to over 6000! Reid died in 1974 and now J&J Promotions operated by Jill Reid Lukesh and Judy Reid Mathieu lovingly oversee their fathers legacy.

There is something primal about the flea market experience that always makes it adventurous and exciting. The not knowing, the longing for surprise, whether you be a successful dealer or conquering buyer. The random stumbling upon treasures just waiting for YOU to snatch them up!! The feeling of, "It was destiny that I now own these old snow shoes from 1817" or "I can't believe I finally found the 12th placesetting for I inherited from my Grandmother." This what we have come to know as the traditional flea market experience.

Here's what I didn't expect from Brimfield. Exceptional artisans selling out of well merchandised tents that displayed more like show rooms than flea market stops. Made to order merchandise being sold in tent environments with piped in music and aromatherapy! Cocktail hours and leopard pumps! Seriously! It was all good. I loved the diversity in the marketplace. I loved that I saw Blond model types posing for invisible paparazzi in LA dealers tents with fake tans, so fun to watch, at the very least memorable. And thankfully I spotted the romantic visual of a dealers "goofer" riding a bike with dress form underarm, possibly delivering it to it's final destination. Mostly I valued the engaging conversations I had with the dealers. The one on one that is so rare these days with texting and tweeting and alike. Face to face random talk about pieces and how they came to be found, repurposed or reconstructed. This to me is the spirit of the many flea markets across the country and the goods you find are a souvenir of that experience.

For the turquoise lover this is the table that dreams are made of. Deep hues that are made from the natural weathering of cooper and time.

Hard to believe I'm in a tent, for a moment I felt as though I were in the South of France.

Sea life is always a beautifier. In New England a staple. This is a lovely collection of coral, so elegant as displayed on wood surface.

Dress form anyone?

These chicks and hens and their antique terracotta home sold quickly. This would have surely come home with me if it hadn't!

You can't deny the beauty of this piece. If your looking for a large table, it can work in almost any space.
I see it in urban, country, Tuscan, transitional, traditional and old world spaces. Brilliant in design and craftsmanship!

Small kitchen needs island? Small island has wine storage? Seriously?

All the elements together glass, metal and wood...nothing better.

Love these antique bottles. The sweetest find of the day!

The beauty of Brimfield and markets like it, is that you really don't know what to expect nor do you want to. Completely and utterly random, beautiful, quirky, distressed and sometimes filled with history or not. Brimfield, unpredictable..a buyers and sellers dream.

My conscious still hounds me that I did not get these low maintenance pets:)

For the past four months I've tried to share the travel path of my daughter's European adventure. Why did I foolishly think it would be any different while she was away...I could hardly keep up!

With Treks every weekend from Milan to Croatia;Ten countries later, her study abroad will be a time in her life that she will never forget and neither will I. Now I await with much anticipation to welcome her home and listen first hand to all of the many newly cherished moments that are now hers forever.

Our children teach us so much more about ourselves than we sometimes want to admit. The gift they give us as we watch them grow into adulthood is a priceless lesson in human behavior...theirs and ours. Thank you for indulging me for the past four months and allowing me to explore my love of design coupled with a few family milestones. Okay! So it's not conventional wallpaper as we know it! Nevertheless, I had to share these examples of taking a simple material or object and making a huge impact! Katrine Hildbrandt Hussey, a Display Coordinator for Anthropologie stopped me in my tracks with her floral display. Hundreds of delicate paper petals climbing up the walls and onto the ceiling. Sculptural beauty executed to create a visual dance out of paper plates! Katrines manages to create artwork that is wonderful to look at in addition to being green...how cool is that! I can't wait to see what she does next.

The next fun "spotting" I stumbled upon was the fabulous vintage clothing shop "CIRCA" in New Bedford, Ma.. The shop was filled with fantastic vintage clothing and accessories. If you love vintage glam apparel this place is a MUST! So much fun and plenty of eye candy "rack style" to choose from.

The next stop in the Netherlands takes us to Amsterdam. Here are a few of the building facades that Lauren found inspiring...

Notice the Dutch gable and all it's adornment. The purest example would have a scalloped/curved eaves that lead up to a pediment.

Renaissance inspired, the large windows above the doors are much more florid in decoration and detailing than a typical transom window.

Here is a minimalist approach to dutch architecture.

The Kasteel Well, Netherlands Connection

Over the next few months in addition to regular post, my daughter Lauren and I will be sharing a visual gallery of architecture, interiors and sightseeing of and around the Netherlands. Lauren will be sharing her new experiences in the form of images while studying at Boston's Emerson College abroad program. The campus is better known as "Kasteel Well" located in the Dutch province of Limburg in the small village of Well, Netherlands. The Kasteel (castle) is reminiscent of an era gone by. Surrounded by an inner and outer moat, Kasteel is also flanked by two courtyards and speaks of 14 century Medieval architecture. While there, she will be trekking throughout Europe and taking snapshots of her extended classroom for all of us to enjoy!

After crossing the Kasteel bridge to gain access to the property, a brick walkway leads you beyond the arched coined entryway into the courtyard.

The brick facade cascades into a scalloped pattern as it frames the red planked doors.

Calm moat waters surround the Kasteel.

A long day of traveling from Boston to the Netherlands the sun begins to set...how beautiful.

5. On the first day of spring I start to prepare for a season of gardening. Nothing better than being outdoors and working with my hands...totally mind cleansing.

7. Finally and most importantly, the most precious people in my life: This photo was taken 2 years ago on the day of my daughters senior prom. Seems like just yesterday that we were changing diapers. Where does the time go?

I love decorating with organic material. A simple branch I found in the woods adds texture and a bit of whimsy. I used my tree friendly ornaments like glittery maple leaves, frosted pine cones and a crystal birds nest to decorate my branch.

It's the weekend and I'm in the mood to be inspired and visually stimulated. So I go to Zimman's! I know I won't be disappointed! If you wish to quench your tactile thirst and awaken your senses, browse through the many isles of the historic fabric retail gem. Located in Lynn, Ma. since 1909 Zimman's is known for not only it's fine fabrics but it's wonderful furnishings and accessories. A great place for a Saturday morning jaunt!

Design advice on a budget

Kathi Delrose like so many home owners wanted the guidance of a designer before tackling her living room project. Kathi realized that with a plan and direction she could avoid costly mistakes. However she had to find an alternative to full service design fearing she would blow her budget. After receiving an email from Kathi we discussed the option and flexibility of design by consultation. Together we would customize a plan to integrate my services. This was the perfect solution allowing Kathi creative input and affordability...and so we began. We decided that I would devise a floor plan using existing pieces in addition to new purchases. Basically I would present a color schematic, a space plan and she would shop for specific items based on my advise on furnishings and accessories.

Before making final decisions I would assist Kathi on a shopping trip to confirm purchases.

The before...

After! Newly painted walls and recessed lighting set the stage. The fireplace was originally brass. A pewter high-heat resistant spray paint was applied to give it new life. Kathi gave the bar cabinet a few coats of ebony stain and now it looks amazing! It still sits to the right of the French doors.

The silk striped chairs are Boston Interiors clearance items...amazing find!

Kathy already had this table, she just gave it a new vase a made a new floral spray for it!

Love the new mirror! It adds lustre to the room and cast a great outdoor reflection. The bookcase was a "Fiddleheads" consignment find! They always have something for my clients!

Love this piece!! The silvery metallic finish is beautiful and solved Kathi's storage problem.

The new oval glass coffee table keeps the space feeling light and airy. The non-angular shape eases traffic in limited spaces. Milk chocolate draperies highlight the chocolate stripe in the chairs giving the room a more cohesive look. Finally...the starting point and anchor of the room. A new rug adding texture and warmth to the space.

Kathi is still working on some of the final touches of her room and having fun doing it. I think the room looks beautiful and I will always remember all the laughter and fun we had pulling it together!!

Here's to a new space to enjoy with family and friends this holiday season!

However this can be achieved anywhere there is ample dead space. A built-in will not only provide storage but can add value as well as beautify your home.

Beef-up your crown molding by dropping down 4"- 6" and then add a smaller piece of mill work directly to sheet rock to create the illusion of a larger crown. I matched the back wall of cabinetry to the sheet rock flanked by the molding making the palette more cohesive. To make the molding more cohesive, paint all three sections the same color and you will have a grand crown molding for very little cost. Finally two 3" task lights were added to illuminate the interior!

The "abalone" platter displayed and the charcoal chair are both from Crate and Barrel. Everything else is from Pottery Barn.

Do you have a bedroom that calls you at the end of the day? A place that is calm and void of distractions? Your bedroom is the most important room in your home. It should be a restful healing space to rejuvenate mind, body and soul. Take good care of yourself. Make your bedroom a sanctuary where you can leave the rest of the world behind.

In this room I chose to paint the ceiling robin's egg blue to mimic the sky. The walls are matte china white and everything else resembles a beach palette. Clean, not fussy and most of all inviting. Make a walk to your bedroom feel like a returning trip to your favorite resort.

Canton, Ma. Project

Here's a little inside look at a current project I'm working on. I thought I'd share the journey that started almost a year ago. This home is in the process of adding on a new kitchen, family room, laundry room, powder room and an in law addition. Since the last photo the lawn was leveled and reseeded. The oil-rubbed bronze exterior light fixtures are on order and the awning post are soon to be installed. Once the door is stained I'll post the exterior transformation!

Old awning removed, new copper barreled awning installed. New supporting post will be custom built on site.

New Craftsman door!! Love Simpson doors, I have one of my own:) Will be staining this with a combination of English Chestnut and Sedona Red.

Ben Moore's Briarwood on top is the chosen color. Will also be doing shutters in the warmest deepest bronze to compliment the Murray Feiss oil-rubbed exterior fixtures on order.

New steps for both entryways.

Since this image the lawn has been leveled and reseeded and the new driveway for the in law residence has been paved. Now waiting for awning supports and exterior lighting. Next time I'll show you the rear of the house and it's stunning new deck. Will keep you posted!

The Nemetz Family Kitchen

The Nemetz Family Kitchen is warm and welcoming in Canton, Massachusetts. Highly functional this family hub shows plenty of style, detail and personality. The central island is well designed with an angled counter top conducive to ease and function. In addition to ample seating, the massive island surface will accommodate the largest baking project or dinner party!! Classic ivory cabinetry help to set the stage for a pop of apple green throughout. Adding texture and depth are Roman shades fabricated from Amy Butler’s textiles. Great job Sarah!

Love the honed soap stones subtle vain.

The window seat provides extra seating and a place for reading or a cup of tea. How great is that!

With the kitchen located off the rear entrance this extra closet is a welcome addition!

A hood that serves a dual purpose.

French doors were added to provide easy access to the screened porch.

Beautiful turquoise urns adorn the island and add intensity to the palette.

Emily Gilbert Behind The Lens...

Raised by the influence of two artist teachers, Emily Gilbert grew up in a creatively rich environment. Home was an old blue farmhouse in northern N.J. that Emily lovingly refers to as her, overloaded prop shop where her journey into multi-mediums began. Beyond her artfully honed childhood, Emily explores sculpture to graphic design while attending college, ultimately receiving a Degree from NYU in experimental theatre. Emily then went on to intern with the renowned Julie Taymor, Director of “The Lion King” and “Frida.” As a result, Julie introduces her to the world of film and television which led Emily to life as a Set Dresser and Prop Stylist. Although grateful for the opportunities afforded her, Emily found herself searching for professional stability and consistency. Little did she know that the advice of a family member would soon take her back to a birthday gift she received in high school…“Emiliy, you should be a photographer!” Those words resonated with Emily and now she is capturing her various interests and fascinations with the lens of a camera. Her passion for interior and exterior environments coupled with a history as a Set Dresser naturally evolved into the art of Interior and Architectural photography.

How I love a planked ceiling, especially with this stunning light fixture dancing below it. This space is so inviting with a sofa that's easy to climb into!

Photographing spaces for Elle Décor would be Emily's short term editorial goal. As a long term goal she dreams of traveling the globe with a writer to create a page turning work of art in the form of a well versed, beautifully photographed coffee book. I personally look forward to making that purchase!

Phyllis Rea Gorman

In closing the month of September, I wanted to share the photography of Phyllis Rea Gorman. Phyllis’s desire to photograph began with a curious passion to see the unseen. Phyllis will intently focus her lens on the heart of her subjects that are often overlooked or ignored. In her words, “I want to capture the extraordinary out of the ordinary.” Now she is sharing those visual moments with people in galleries throughout New England. Currently her work is being viewed at “The Next Door Gallery” in Mansfield thru December. She is also a member of the Attleboro Museum and South Shore Art Center. In addition to her talent as a photographer, Phyllis Rea Gorman has taught children as an Educator of the written word for close to 40 years. Phyllis’s love for teaching and love of spirit has taught many how to recognize the “extraordinary” and to reach beyond the ordinary. She is truly a lovely human being and I’ll forever be grateful for the love of writing and creativity she has gifted both my children.

Doug Garranbrants, Venetian plaster artisan and Lena Fransioli, fine artist are the married principles of Zoe Design and have been painting murals and decorative finishes from Los Angeles to Tokyo for 28 years. Lena Fransioli a Harvard graduate is also a student of the Parsons School of Design in NY. In addition, she studied at the Inchbald School of Design in London and more recently took a year long painting sabbatical with her mural partner Brooke Sheldon in Florence, Italy. Zoe Design is currently headquarted in Boston where their team of highly skilled artist assist in project installations of all sizes. The team specializes in murals, Venetian plaster, wall glazing, faux finishes, metal leaf, marmorino, floor and ceiling stenciling, custom stenciling, painted furnishings, wallpaper and more. One look at their work and years of dedication and passion are revealed.

When I asked for the source of inspiration, Lena's response was, "It all started with the wanting to give a wall depth and transparency. Whether we are painting a mural, glazing or applying decorative plaster, I am always searching for ways to see into or through the surface."

Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada are owners and creative designers of Casamidy. In 1998 the couple began their mission to create contemporary design using traditional artisan methods. Anne-Marie and Jorge recently moved from San Miguel to Bruselles, Belgium and are being inspired by the new surroundings. Their new home is absolutely beautiful! It will be finished sometime next year. Can't wait to show you the results!

The Hospico Headboard.

The Hacienda Headboard is the crowning glory of this room. Love the texture and layering used to make the bed interesting and elegant. A variation of pattern and scale when selecting fabric is key to maintaining balance and harmony when choosing textiles. Fitzhugh Karol and Lyndsay Caleo's Brooklyn Home.

Fitzhugh Karol and Lyndsay Caleo of The Brooklyn Home Company are living and working the urban artist dream. Fitzhugh a woodworker and sculptor and Lyndsay a metalsmith are both RISD grads. Together they hone their craft daily at The Brooklyn Home Company as contributing artisans. In addition they collaborate on architectural and interior design.

Below: Fitzhugh created a white sculptor that hangs above the fireplace. In addition he made the bookcase, the mahogany coffee table and the Yzir heart bar stools. Lyndsay found the Indian daybed at a salvage yard.

The beams were unveiled during demolition. They were hidden above a drop ceiling. The cage lights were from a freighter ship from India. The ladder leads to a guest room loft area and the table was made by both Lyndsay and Fitzhugh from a birch tree.

A Sapele island countertop anchors the kitchen. The shelving is reclaimed wood from an old mill from upstate NY. The sink is a vintage American Standard farm sink and Olive is the perfect mascot!

A mirror Lyndsay's father made hangs among the rest of their collection.

Extra large double hung windows fill the kitchen with light.

A second living room was added downstairs. Fitzhugh made the sofa out of reclaimed beams.

Sapele wood top the treads in the hallway. Love the sculptor at top of the stairs that Fitzhugh made for Lyndsay.

The guest room was inspired by sleeping quarters on a ship.

Beautifully handcrafted beech and ash bed by Fitzhugh.

Lyndsay found a bathroom door at Fitzhugh's family's New Hampshire sheep barn.

Founded in 1973 in Cambridge Ma., The Caning Shoppe is restoring furnishings back to life. Their work shoppe located in Davis Square displays a variety of specialties beyond the caned seat. The Shoppe repairs rattan, wicker, Shaker tape,Upholstery and more. For those of you who are DIY types, caning classes will be available in the fall!

While attending the ARTBEAT FESTIVAL in Somerville Ma., I came across two artisans work I could not ignore. The first Rebecca Swiller Munn a potter of (Clay-ol-o-gy) at the MUD FLAT GALLERY. Beautifully handcrafted her work displayed a lovely collection of blue/green and brown pottery. They all reminded me of the ocean.
Ron Perssolano, a wood turner from Brimmfield Ma. made these amazing hollowed, pierced & incised vessels and more.... Smooth to the touch and visually tactile. The variety of wood finishes and materials make his work interesting and pure. A HOME IS MORE INTERESTING WITH A FEW JEWELS MADE BY THE HAND.
